Curriculum vitae

Joseph Ali.

Director of IT
& Technology

Thirteen years leading technology functions, with a computer science background and a bias toward staying hands-on. I own the systems a business runs on — infrastructure, security, delivery, and the teams behind them — and I stay accountable for them after go-live.

01 — Profile

Technology leader with thirteen years of directing IT and technology organisations. Formal grounding in computer science, which is why I still read the code, the config, and the incident log rather than only the summary. I am most useful where a business has outgrown its systems and needs someone who can set direction and then personally verify it landed.

My work sits at the seam between strategy and operations. I translate commercial pressure into a technical roadmap, then stay close enough to delivery to know whether the roadmap survived contact with reality. The measure of the job is not the plan. It is whether the thing runs on a Tuesday afternoon without anyone thinking about it.

02 — Scope

Technology leadership

Strategy · Budget · Vendors · Team

  • Own the technology roadmap and the operating budget behind it, including the trade-off conversations that decide what does not get built.
  • Hire, structure, and develop technical teams for the version of the organisation that exists in three years, not the one in this quarter.
  • Run vendor selection and contract negotiation, with a standing preference for reversible commitments over long lock-in.
  • Translate technical risk into terms a board will act on, and commercial pressure into work an engineer can start on Monday.

Infrastructure & operations

Networks · Identity · Resilience · Security posture

  • Accountable for the systems the business cannot trade without: networks, servers, cloud estate, identity, endpoints, and the connections between them.
  • Treat uptime as an accumulated habit rather than a heroic response — change control, monitoring, and capacity planning done before they are urgent.
  • Run backup and disaster recovery as a rehearsed drill with a measured restore time, not a line item that has never been tested.
  • Own security posture end to end: least-privilege access, patch discipline, logging that is actually reviewed, and incident response that has been practised.

Engineering & automation

Tooling · Integration · Scripting · Internal platforms

  • Build the internal tooling that deletes manual process, on the principle that any task done weekly by hand is a task waiting to be automated.
  • Integrate systems that were never designed to talk to each other, and own the failure modes that appear at those joins.
  • Stay hands-on in an editor deliberately — direction given without technical detail is guesswork dressed up as leadership.
  • Write the documentation that survives the author leaving, and keep it close enough to the system that it stays true.

03 — How I work

Boring on purpose

The systems that survive are the ones with the fewest moving parts and the most obvious failure modes. Novelty is a cost, and it is charged to whoever is on call, usually years after the decision.

Verify, then claim

A change is not done because it was deployed. It is done when it has been observed working in production, and when the rollback has been confirmed to exist. Evidence over assertion, every time.

Write it down

Decisions live longer than the people who make them. I document the reasoning and the discarded options, not just the outcome, so the next person can tell the difference between a choice and an accident.

  • The reason the leadership work stays technical. Fundamentals age far better than any particular platform.
