Why Should You Start Blogging Right Now!

Today’s work environment has is completely different than what it used to be, especially for the information workers. What has changed? Now, there are so many other ways to influence the job process and get hired. The old saying, “It’s not what you know; its who you know” has more meaning than ever. The number of people you know has expanded drastically thanks to social media, and what they know about you become much more easily available.

Here are some ideas on building your online presence with your career in mind.

Your Blog Is A Modern Resume

If you haven’t considered this yet, understand that my blogs and websites are responsible for dozens of inquiries over the years. Why? Because people who might want to know about using video or blogging or making podcasts or trying this all together into a strategy see examples, almost daily, of what I think, what I now, and how I’ve accomplished some of this in my own life and career.

Blogging is basically just writing about you put on your resume, line by line, and is a lot more detailed and less boring.

Techniques to Consider

Once you start thinking of your blog as a way for people to know more about you, what you stand for, and who you are, you might consider doing a few things

  • Consider placing your picture on the main page. I actually feel like I haven’t done this enough. Working on getting some shots soon.
  • Make your “About” page robust. Write about who you are, where to find you, what you’re passionate about.
  • Make it easy for people to contact you. My e-mail is right there on the blog, as well as my Facebook messenger. These are awesome ways to bring in new interesting conversations, especially ones that one always land in the comments section of your blog.
  • Consider what you want to talk about in your blog. Even if you don’t have one set genre to talk about, Google will help build your web presence with the content that you do write. So get to writing!!
  • Build your LinkedIn profile. That is the industry standard now. LinkedIn is a great way to network with fellow professionals in your field and to find people who share interests.
  • You might consider putting up a video about yourself. There is something much more engaging about video content, and people can see more about who you are and how you act in a video. Making a video isn’t especially hard these days. You can probably get by recording it on your iPhone or Android phone. Most devices nowadays record in 1080p/4k resolution.

Pay attention to online job postings and make sure you are looking in both traditional and non-traditional places. Many websites have their own job boards, such as Signals, TechCrunch, etc.
